Signing Ceremony for Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects for Demining in Petrovo, Celic and Han Pijesak

Under the scheme of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects, the Government of Japan decided to grant 408,660 Euro (approx. 800,000 KM) for the Project for Support of Demining in Petrovo, Celic and Han Pijesak. On November 9, Ambassador of Japan to BiH, Mr. Kazuya Ogawa signed the Grant Contract with Ambassador Tomaz Lovrencic, Director of ITF Enhancing Human Security at the Embassy of Japan in BiH.
The U.S. Embassy in BiH co-financed the project in the amount of 24,000 EUR for the project administration costs. Ms. Maureen Cormack, Ambassador of the United States of America to BiH attended the ceremony. From Bosnia and Herzegovina, representatives of BHMAC, Municipalities of Petrovo, Celic and Han Pijesak attended the ceremony.
It is estimated that 80,000 landmines and ERWs remain in minefields throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina and it poses serious threat to the safety of the local population in BiH. Demining is one of priority areas of Japanese assistance to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since 1996, the Government of Japan has granted over 8.7 million EUR (over 17 million KM) for the demining activities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
