Signing Ceremony for Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects for Demining in Novo Grazde and Bosanska Krupa

  

On 9 March, Mr. Akihito Teruuchi, Charge d’Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of Japan signed the Grant Contract of Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project for “The Project for Support of Demining in Novo Grazde and Bosanska Krupa” with Ambassador Tomaz Lovrencic, Director of ITF Enhancing Human Security.

The Government of Japan decided to grant 316,220 Euros (approx. 620,000 KM) for demining of a total of 301,177 square meters of mine affected land in these municipalities. With implementation of this project, about 33,000 residents in both municipalities will receive benefit.

Municipality Mayors of Novo Grazde and Bosanska Krupa, as well as representatives from BHMAC, US Embassy and Slovenian Embassy also attended the ceremony.

It is estimated that 80,000 landmines and ERWs remain in minefields throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina and it poses serious threat to the safety of the local population in BiH. Demining is one of priority areas of Japanese assistance to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since 1996, the Government of Japan has granted over 8.7 million EUR (over 17 million KM) for the demining activities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
