Signing Ceremony for Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects for Demining in Ilijas and Busovaca


Under the scheme of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects, the Government of Japan decided to grant 314,787 Euro (over 615,000KM) for the Project for Support of Demining in Ilijas and Busovaca. On March 16, Ambassador of Japan to BiH, Mr. Kazuya Ogawa signed the Grant Contract with Ambassador Damjan Bergant, Director of ITF Enhancing Human Security at the Embassy of Japan in BiH.

The project is co-financed by the U.S. Embassy in BiH in the amount of 18,000 EUR for the project administration costs. Ms. Maureen Cormack, Ambassador of the United States of America to BiH attended the ceremony. From Bosnia and Herzegovina, representatives of BHMAC, Municipalities of Ilijas and Busovaca attended it.

Estimated 120,000 landmines and ERWs remain in minefields throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina and it poses serious threat to the safety of the local population in BiH. Demining is one of priority areas of Japanese assistance to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since 1996, the Government of Japan has granted over 8.3 million EUR (approx. 17 million KM) for the demining activities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
